FIFA World Cup 2026 Carbon Footprint Hits 9 Million Tonnes as Emissions Shift to Skies

The expanded FIFA World Cup 2026 generated an estimated 7.8 to 9.0 million tonnes of CO2e, according to a new executive report from World Climate Athletes, making it more than double the reported footprint of Qatar 2022 and setting a new benchmark for the climate cost of global sport.


World Climate Athletes, known as WCA, published the report on 20 July 2026 in London. Titled The Climate Bill of the Expanded FIFA 2026 Game, the analysis examines the 39-day tournament across Canada, Mexico, and the United States, covering 48 teams, 104 matches, and 16 host cities.


Its central finding is clear: the climate burden of mega-events has shifted. Stadium construction, long seen as a major problem for hosts, fell to a historic low because the tournament reused existing venues. Fan travel, especially long-haul aviation across North America and from overseas, became the dominant source of emissions.

WCA says the 2026 tournament marks a turning point for sport


The report frames the 2026 World Cup as a test case for the future of mega-event sustainability. For years, climate scrutiny has focused on the materials, land use, and construction linked to new venues. In 2026, that problem looked much smaller.


According to WCA, reusing existing commercial stadia limited infrastructure emissions to around 238,000 tonnes of CO2e, equal to 3.1% of the total footprint. That is a strikingly low share for an event of this size.


The problem moved elsewhere.


Spectator transport accounted for an estimated 87.8% of the tournament’s total emissions, around 6.8 million tonnes of CO2e. The report describes this as the largest carbon debt in sporting history linked to fan mobility.


That shift matters because the 2026 World Cup was designed around scale. More teams meant more matches. More host cities meant more movement. A three-country tournament spread across vast distances meant supporters, teams, officials, media, and service workers had to cross borders and continents.


The report’s headline finding, that the FIFA World Cup 2026 carbon footprint reached up to 9 million tonnes, places mobility at the centre of future event planning.

The figures point to a difficult trade-off. The 2026 hosts avoided one of the most visible causes of sports-related emissions by using existing venues. Yet the event’s geographic spread increased the impact of travel so sharply that the overall footprint still reached record levels.


Fan travel became the main climate risk


The 2026 World Cup covered 16 cities across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. That geography created a different emissions profile from tournaments with tighter regional clustering.


For many fans, following a team meant flying between cities rather than travelling by rail or coach. International supporters faced long transatlantic, transpacific, and intercontinental flights before reaching their first match. Domestic journeys across North America could also involve distances larger than many cross-border trips in Europe.


WCA’s analysis calls this the mobility shift. It shows that greener stadium policy can only go so far when the tournament format drives large volumes of flight activity.


That does not mean venue reuse failed. It means venue reuse solved one part of the problem while revealing another.


A stadium can be efficient. It can use renewable electricity, reduce waste, and avoid new concrete. But if hundreds of thousands of spectators fly long distances to reach it, the largest emissions source may sit far beyond the stadium gate.

The aviation gap leaves emissions off national climate ledgers


One of the report’s most serious claims concerns accounting. WCA argues that the bulk of the tournament’s emissions falls into a gap between event reporting and national climate pledges.


International aviation emissions are usually treated differently from emissions produced inside a country’s borders. Under standard climate inventory practice, international aviation and shipping are often reported separately rather than counted inside national totals used for climate targets.


That creates what WCA calls the NDC accounting loophole.


NDCs, or nationally determined contributions, are the climate pledges that countries submit under the Paris Agreement. WCA says the flight surges linked to the 2026 tournament are not fully reflected in the national ledgers of the United States, Mexico, or Canada because so much of the travel was international and temporary.


In plain terms, millions of tonnes of emissions can be created by a host event without sitting clearly inside any host country’s climate promise.


This matters for future tournaments because host nations may report progress on domestic climate goals while mega-events generate large travel-related emissions outside the main accounting frame. The report argues that this makes current event sustainability claims too narrow.

The carbon bill is large, even beside record revenues


WCA also places the tournament’s emissions beside its commercial results. The report estimates that the event generated US$13 billion in commercial revenue.


By contrast, independent estimates cited in the report put the cost of fully mitigating the carbon footprint at US$787 million. WCA translates that into two simple comparisons:


  • US$114 per match ticket

  • US$4.50 per broadcast viewer


Those figures are not presented as a consumer charge already in place. They are a way to show the scale of the liability relative to the audience and revenue base.


The comparison raises a governance question. If mega-events can generate record income while leaving the hardest emissions outside national accounts, who should pay to deal with them?


The possible answers include organisers, host governments, sponsors, broadcasters, ticket holders, or some mix of all of them. WCA’s point is that the cost should be visible at the planning stage, not discovered after the final whistle.


Heat added pressure inside enclosed venues


Travel dominated the footprint, but it was not the only source of emissions. WCA also highlights the role of extreme summer heat and cooling demand.


According to the report, heatwaves during the tournament required high-intensity environmental controls across eight host venues. Enclosed stadia using industrial heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems generated 11.4 tonnes of CO2e in direct cooling load per match.


This figure is small compared with aviation, but it points to a growing risk for future summer events. Football tournaments take place in the same season when many host regions face higher temperatures, grid pressure, and peak electricity demand.


Cooling is also not just a comfort issue. It affects player safety, spectator health, pitch conditions, broadcasting infrastructure, and emergency planning.


For hosts, that means climate adaptation and emissions reduction now overlap. Venues need to protect people from heat while avoiding a rise in energy-related emissions. That may require cleaner electricity, better passive cooling, shade, ventilation design, and careful scheduling.

The report calls for transit budgets in host selection


WCA sets out three governance recommendations for future tournaments and global sporting events.


Passenger travel should count in official event carbon accounts


The first recommendation is to mandate transit budgets. That means organisers would formally include passenger travel in official event carbon accounting, rather than treating it as an indirect or optional category.


A credible transit budget would need to estimate likely travel patterns before host selection. It would also need to compare different formats, such as clustered regional hosting, rail-linked hubs, or match schedules that reduce repeat flights.


This could change how bids are assessed. A bid with existing stadiums but extreme travel distances may look less sustainable once fan movement is counted in full.


Aviation surges should be tracked by host nations


The second recommendation is to close reporting gaps. WCA calls for international aviation surges linked to major events to be tracked within host-nation climate inventories.


That would not be simple. International aviation involves airlines, airports, origin countries, destination countries, and global reporting systems. Yet WCA argues that ignoring the surge makes the climate impact look smaller than it is.


A more transparent approach could include a separate event-linked aviation inventory. That would show the public, policymakers, and sports bodies how much extra flight activity a tournament creates.


Athletes should lead fan behaviour campaigns


The third recommendation is to deploy athlete champions. WCA argues that elite athletes can influence fan choices in ways that official messaging often cannot.


The report points to campaigns focused on low-carbon transit and energy efficiency. In practice, that could mean encouraging fans to:


  • Choose rail or coach travel where realistic

  • Stay longer in one host region rather than fly between several cities

  • Share local transport routes to stadiums

  • Reduce energy use in accommodation

  • Support credible climate action linked to the event


Athlete-led campaigns will not remove the need for structural changes. Fans cannot choose a low-carbon route that does not exist. Yet public figures in sport can make lower-carbon choices more visible and socially normal.


What this means for future World Cups


The report arrives at a time when global sport is still expanding. Larger tournaments can bring more countries into the competition, grow audiences, and increase revenue. They can also produce far more travel.


The 2026 World Cup shows that sustainability claims based mainly on stadium reuse may miss the largest part of the footprint. A host can avoid new construction and still create a record emissions total if the event depends on mass long-distance flying.


Future organisers may need to ask different questions much earlier:


  • Can matches be clustered to reduce repeated flights?

  • Can group-stage scheduling keep teams and fans in tighter regions?

  • Can host cities be linked by lower-carbon transport?

  • Should bid rules score mobility emissions as heavily as stadium plans?

  • Who pays for mitigation when emissions sit outside national ledgers?


These are not small technical issues. They affect the design of the tournament itself.


A record footprint changes the standard for accountability


WCA’s report does not argue that global sport should retreat from international competition. It argues that the climate accounting must match the real shape of modern events.


For the 2026 World Cup, the main lesson is stark. Reusing venues helped, and it mattered. But the largest source of emissions was not concrete, steel, or lighting. It was movement across vast distances.

The next phase of climate action in sport will need to treat travel as a core design issue, not a side effect. That means counting it, publishing it, pricing it, and reducing it where possible.
